Now extinct, the ammonite mollusc was a shelled cephalopod. It appeared in a coiled, spiral external shell similar to that of the modern nautilus.

The extinction of ammonites coincided with the extinction of dinosaurs, during the Cretaceous Period 66 million years ago.
