Geology :
As members of the quartz group, tiger’s eye and the related blue-coloured mineral hawk’s eye gain their silky, lustrous appearance from the parallel intergrowth of quartz crystals and altered amphibole fibres that have mostly turned into limonite.
This structure of parallel fibers is preserved in the stone, and the chatoyant “eye” crosses the parallel fibers at right angles.
The best specimens of tigers eye are usually cut in cabochon in an orientation that yields the best display of chatoyancy.
