Carnelian is a variety of chalcedony and is a microcrystalline quartz crystal. As a chalcedony, carnelian is formed from the inter growth of two silica minerals with differing crystal structures.

Carnelian is an orange gemstone that forms within ancient volcanic lava or igneous rocks. The gemstone gets its rusty colour from trace amounts of iron in the fluids that form the crystals
