Perisphinctes is an extinct genus of ammonite cephalopod. They lived during the Middle to Late Jurassic epochs 163 million years ago. and serve as an index fossil for that time period. These ancient marine mollusks were similar to the modern squid, octopus and nautiloids. They were creatures of the open tropical seas and are now abundant in limestones from tropical reefs.
The name ‘ammonite’ originates from the Greek Ram-horned god called Ammon. Ammonites belong to a group of predators known as cephalopods, which includes their living relatives the octopus, squid, cuttlefish, and nautilus.
Perisphinctes Ammonite Fossil Is sourced from the Tulear region of Southern Madagascar, this well-preserved piece dates back to the Jurassic Period.
