A member of the mica family, It occurs in granite pegmatites, in some high-temperature quartz veins, greisens and granites.
Most specimens of lepidolite have pink, red or purple as their dominant hue. These are the expected colors of lepidolite. The mineral sometimes has a dark tone, which gives it a grayish appearance. Secondly, rare specimens of lepidolite can be colorless or yellow.
Additionally, many people assume that lithium produces the color of lepidolite; however, Manganese is the cause of color in pink, red and purple.
A pegmatite is a very coarse-grained deposit in which large crystals are able to grow because of special conditions. In order to grow large crystals and form pegmatites, igneous bodies must cool very slowly and also have high rates of diffusion. Generally, this is aided through the presence of water or vapor or both.
