Geology :

Now extinct, the ammonite mollusc was a shelled cephalopod, usually appearing in a coiled, spiral shape. The subclass Ammonoidea, a group that is often referred to as ammonites, first appeared about 450 million years ago.

The extinction of ammonites coincided with the extinction of dinosaurs. Ammonites inhabited the world’s oceans and now appear as fossils in marine life. Ammonites were predatory, squid like creatures that lived inside coil-shaped shells. Like other cephalopods, ammonites had sharp, beak like jaws inside a ring of tentacles that extended from their shells to snare prey such as small fish and crustaceans. Some ammonites grew more than one meter across, possible snack food for the giant mosasaurus.
