African Green Opal is a rich green variety of opal, usually including black or brown fern-like inclusions, and comes in a wide range of green and brown shades. It doesn’t contain the colour flashes that precious opal is known for, but still a beautiful common opal.

Green opal forms when silica spheres, sourced from silicate rocks eroded by running water, pool together with water to form a silica-rich mixture. This mixture then drips through cracks or fissures in the earth to form a concentration of silica spheres. These then arrange in complex layers to form opals.
