How to Cleanse Gemstones

Cleansing your crystals removes any stagnant, absorbed, or negative energy and restores them to their natural energetic state. There are several safe and effective methods for cleansing:

  • Smudging (Smoke Cleanse): Use sage, palo santo, or incense to clear energy—safe for all crystals.
  • Moonlight: Especially the full moon. Gentle and safe for all stones.
  • Sound (Tuning fork, singing bowl): Universal and non-damaging.
  • Selenite or Clear Quartz: These crystals can cleanse others by contact or proximity.
  • Earth Burial: Can recharge crystals, but only if they tolerate moisture and soil.
  • Salt or Saltwater (Caution!): Only for hard, non-toxic crystals.

💧 Crystals that Hate Water (Toxic or Easily Damaged)

These stones either contain toxic elements like copper, aluminum, or arsenic or are soft and soluble, meaning water can damage or dissolve them.

❌ Avoid Water With:

CrystalReason
MalachiteContains copper—can leach toxins & may rust or pit
SeleniteVery soft (Mohs 2), dissolves in water
LepidoliteContains lithium, may flake or break
AzuriteContains copper, easily damaged by water
AngeliteTurns to gypsum when wet
Halite (Salt)Literally dissolves
ChrysocollaVery soft and porous
PyriteCan rust or form sulfuric acid in water
TurquoisePorous; can discolor or crack with water
Calcite (all types)Soft and reactive to acidic or hard water

☀️ Crystals that Fade in the Sunlight

Prolonged sunlight can bleach or damage the color and energy of some crystals. Limit sun exposure for these delicate stones:

❌ Avoid Prolonged Sunlight With:

CrystalWhat Happens
AmethystFades to light purple or grey
AmetrineLoses color intensity
Citrine (especially heat-treated)May fade
Rose QuartzLoses its soft pink hue
FluoriteColor fades and may become brittle
KunziteHighly sensitive to sunlight, fades fast
Smoky QuartzCan lose its depth of color
CelestiteBleaches and may crack
AquamarineColor will pale over time
OpalCan crack or dry out with heat and light
HiddeniteSensitive to both light and heat

✅ Sun-Safe & Water-Safe Crystals (General)

These are generally safe in both sunlight and water, though always double-check individual specimens:

  • Clear Quartz
  • Carnelian (brief sun okay; water-safe)
  • Black Tourmaline
  • Hematite (brief water rinse okay but dry thoroughly)
  • Obsidian (water-safe, avoid long soaks)
  • Tiger’s Eye (sun and water safe in moderation)
  • Agate (safe, but prolonged water exposure not ideal)
  • Red Jasper

🌕 Best All-Around Cleanse (Safe for All Stones)

Full Moon Charging + Smudging + Selenite Plate

Place your crystals under the full moon overnight, use a bit of incense or sage smoke, and store them near a selenite slab or wand. This combo is gentle, energetically strong, and physically safe for all stones.
